Searching by Subject

In netTrekker Search, information on the Web is organized by school subject. You can narrow your search by drilling down through subjects, topics and subtopics that best describe or define what you are looking for.

Here's how to perform a Subject Search:

Click one of the school subjects your netTrekker Search home page. netTrekker Search will display a new page that contains a more detailed list of topics.

Example of a Subject Area:

Read through the list, then drill down by clicking the topic that most closely relates to your need.

To the right of each topic a number appears. These numbers indicate how many websites can be found at that topic and all subtopics beneath it.

Continue to click topics and subtopics, drilling down until you find the specific topic you are looking for.

A "bread crumb" trail of the topics you select, called a taxonomy string, is displayed at the top of the page. To return to a broader topic category, click the corresponding link within the taxonomy string.

Example of a Taxonomy String:

Science > Space Science > Solar System > Planets > Jupiter > Jupiter's Moons > Europa

As you are drilling down, a bar that bears the name of the current topic category appears below the list of categories. Here you will find a list of websites directly related to your topic. At this point, you can click on one of the titles in the list to go to a web resource, or click on the more_sites.gif link to see a full search result from that topic area, including evaluations and additional websites.

If you continue to drill down, eventually you will not be able to go any farther. At that point, a Search Result page is then displayed. This page lists websites on the selected topic. Each website listed has been rated and briefly described by one of netTrekker Search's teacher/evaluators.

For more information on the rating symbols or icons used in each Search Result, double click on one of the icons to see the netTrekker Search Legend. See Advanced Search and/or Refinement Menus to learn more about detailing your search based on content type, source, grade level, language, etc.

Click on one of the links on the Search Results page to go to that web resource. Note that the web resource opens in a different window so that you can keep the netTrekker Search Results page available. The frame above the web resource provides access to several valuable netTrekker Search features, such as Read Aloud, the Dictionary Hot Key, and Voting, as well as providing the title and URL of the web resource.
